What can I do to stay safe when cycling or commuting?

Did you know that In 2016 - 18,477 commuters and cyclists were injured in road accidents, including 3,499 who were killed or seriously injured. This could be greatly prevented by wearing the correct safety apparel and making sure you are fully visible. Of course, there are a lot of other factors to think about when it comes to the causes of these numbers, but if we know that we've done everything we personally can to protect ourselves, at least that's some piece of mind.

So what do we need to stay safe when cycling on the roads?

Lights: When it's dark, mistakes can be made very easily on both ends. Road signs are less visible, you're concentrating on where you're going more than your surroundings, and swaying a little off course is easily done. To help see for yourself and to be seen by oncoming vehicles there should always be a light on both the front and back of your bike. This will help people see you from a distance and know to slow down before getting too near to you.

Hi-Vis Gear: High visibility clothing and accessories are an absolute must have when cycling in low light. The reflection strips that usually come on hi-vis jackets and backpack covers could just be what saves your life. The LEDwear Hi-Vis Backpack Cover not only comes with both a durable high visibility material and reflective strips, but also 12 bright LEDs. With 6 LEDs down both sides, the 3 light modes make you unmissable. A product that would keep you safe at such an affordable cost.

Safety apparel: It's no secret when I say that you need to wear a helmet. Helmets create an additional layer for the head and thus protect the wearer from some of the more severe accidents and injuries you can face when falling from a bike. Also, don't forget to wear your cycling sunglasses. This will protect your eyes from insects which you will from time to time cycle into!

There's plenty more accessories to buy for your commute or general cycle, but these are the basic necessities when it comes to staying safe on the roads. Stay alert and stay visible!
